When a Friend Holds the Lamp

Sometimes my thoughts go dark. I replay mistakes, assume the worst, and speak to myself with a harshness I’d never use with a friend. In those moments, my mind can become a crooked mirror—showing me a distorted version of what’s true.

That’s why a good friend is a gift. A trusted friend doesn’t argue with my feelings, but they shine a light on them. They help me step back and ask: Is this thought true? Is it fair? Is it the whole story? They remind me of what I’ve forgotten—my worth, my progress, and the mercy I’d readily offer someone else.

We aren’t meant to carry our inner weather alone. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is borrow a clearer mind—until our own clears again.
